Painted Desert Inn

Redesigned in the 1940s by Mary Jane Colter, the architect behind similar Hopi-style buildings in Grand Canyon Village, this 1930s adobe lodge is now a museum, decorated with murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie. After narrowly avoiding demolition, it was made a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
