It's rare to see snow in the Sunshine State but that doesn't mean that residents have to miss out on a winter wonderland experience. Later this month, Florida will get a taste of snow at a new winter-themed amusement park, complete with a massive snow tubing hill, an Arctic igloo dome, and an Alpine Village.
In Dade City, Tampa Bay, or Florida's Sports Coast, where winter temperatures average at a mild 72°F, you don't get snow. But that's set to change later this month when Snowcat Ridge opens. For Florida residents who cannot travel this year, the launch couldn't have arrived at a better time, giving them the chance to enjoy some winter fun in a typically snowless state.
The theme park will feature snow-themed rides and activities for adults and children. The highlight is the park's massive snow tubing hill that stands at 60-feet tall and 400-feet long. A magic carpet will whisk riders and their snow tubes to the top of the hill and from there they'll be able to slide in a single, tandem, or six-person family tube down the snow-covered slope.
Snowcat Ridge will also host a 1000-square-foot snow play dome where guests can build snowmen or snow castles from real snow in a cold temperature-controlled arena. There's also a smaller snow tube hill inside for younger riders. "Some folks think it's impossible to experience snow tubing and the joy of snow in Florida. But our team is all about making the impossible, possible," said creative director Mark Bremer.
Dotted around the park are festive nods to European ski resorts so guests can enjoy a fantasy-land winter experience without traveling too far. At night, a light show will illuminate the snow hill and there will be food and drink on sale in the Alpine Village market with hot chocolates, mulled wine, beer, s'mores and hearty winter street food. Craft goods will also be available to purchase. And there will be a seating area to relax in, alongside fire pits.
Snowcat Ridge will run from November 20, 2020 until March 28, 2021. Entry is timed to keep in line with social distancing guidelines. General admission tickets start from $24.95 for a two-hour slot.
