About Daniel

I'm a passionate traveller and prolific guidebook writer who loves getting off the beaten track in search of lesser-known destinations. I lived in Beijing for more than a decade, speak Chinese fluently and know every corner of China like the back of my hand. But I also specialise in India, a country I have spent many years travelling in, both as a backpacker and as a guidebook writer. I always travel with the environment in mind, never using cars or taxis; instead preferring bicycles, buses, trains or just my trusty old feet. I love hiking, and have contributed to numerous British walking guides, mostly for Trailblazer Publications for whom I also wrote the most recent edition of Trans-Siberian Handbook. I hosted nine episodes of Lonely Planet's television show, Best in China, and have represented Lonely Planet and Trailblazer at various public speaking events around the globe. I have a passion for Chinese loose-leaf tea, and have written about Chinese tea (as well as Chinese food) in a number of Lonely Planet publications. What really gets my juices going, though, is adventure travel: I've cycled solo across the Gobi Desert, have been ice-swimming in northern China, and have walked and camped my way along the entire length of England's Southwest Coast Path (630 miles; 7 weeks).
