About Ashley

I’m a Northern California-based journalist who writes about the sea, wildlife, travel, passionate people, marginalized people and the occasional murder.

I learned to tell stories as an alt-weekly staff writer and coached writing at Stanford University; later I absconded to Costa Rica where I edited a newspaper features section and an inflight travel magazine. My story about a killer Costa Rican rodeo bull was a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists.

In 2015 I became a Lonely Planet guidebook writer, and I’ve now reported from 15 countries and co-authored 48 guidebooks. In 2020 I took a part-time associate editor job covering California’s parks for SFGATE. When not on assignment you’ll find me jumping on trampolines, scuba diving and taking photos of wildlife, my dog included.
